Fire-type moves revolve around flames and heat, often carrying the added effect of inflicting Burn. This status weakens physical attackers over time, but Fire Pokémon themselves are completely immune to being Burned. Their natural resistance, combined with strong offensive power, makes them dependable in battle.
Fire-types are less common than other Starters due to the rarity of fire in natural phenomena. A few species embody pure fire concepts, like Slugma, Numel, Magmar, Torkoal, Volcarona, and Volcanion. Many others are inspired by predators, such as Pyroar, Arcanine, and Heatmor.
Designs often pull from cultural myths. Vulpix and Fennekin reference Japanese folklore linking foxes with flames, while most Fire starters—along with Ponyta, Houndour, and Pansear—connect to the Chinese zodiac.
Some Fire-types stray from animal origins, drawing from objects instead. Rotom’s Heat form reflects an oven, while the Litwick line embodies ghostly fire in candles and chandeliers. These variations show how the type can be both destructive and symbolic.
If you teach a fire Pokémon a Grass move, it can cover all of its weaknesses. Consider giving your Fire Pokémon a Grass Tera and teaching it Tera Blast, when appropriate.
In addition to the perfect starter triangle or Fire-Water-Grass, Fire is part of another perfect triangle: Fire-Steel-Rock.
The status condition Burn can be devastating. It causes damage every turn to your opponent and cuts their attack stat in half.
